Legends For The FAN With Kentucky Head Coach John Calipari
PITTSBURGH (93-7 The FAN) - Our latest installment of Legends For The FAN was with Kentucky Men's Basketball Head Coach and Pittsburgh native John Calipari.
Calipari sat down with our own Bob Pompeani to talk about everything from taking in the Pirates-Reds game, if he ever had any desire to be the head coach at Pitt and the upcoming Coaches vs Cancer event.
When it comes to the Pirates victory over the Reds, you can count Calipari among those impressed with the job Manager Clint Hurdle has done.
"What Clint did with this team...he held that team together, a team that had like the jinx of 20 years, and they did it," said Calipari. "And then they go out by smashing the Reds three games in Cincinnati, come back here and did what they did, it was unbelievable and I'm just so happy for them all."
When it comes to his own career and what he has accomplished, Calipari was asked if at any point he had aspiration to be the head coach for his hometown Panthers.
"There was probably a point that I would say that, but it's hard to come home, it just is," he said. "It's funny here, in pro sports you can do it, but it's just hard in college. What they've done here with the school, with the academics, with the facilities and now in the ACC, this thing is on an upward swing. I'm proud to say I'm a Pitt fan.
Calipari also went on to discuss what it's like coaching some of the high-profile players he has had, if he thinks college athletes should be paid and what it's like coaching for such a rabid fan base like the following Kentucky has.
