Leechburg Farm Providing Thanksgiving Turkeys For More Than 8 Decades
LEECHBURG (KDKA) -- Thanksgiving shoppers have been buying their birds at Pounds' Turkey Farm in Leechburg for more than eight decades.
"This is our larger turkey coop. It houses about 8,000 turkeys," says business manager Beverly Jones, entering a long, low building. The turkeys get sunlight and space to roam.
"They even have turkey toys over there," she says. "We actually use an oregano in the feed, and that's a natural anti-inflamatory. We've avoided antibiotics forever. We've never done those."
Beverly says the farm was started by Harry and Thelma Pounds back in 1935.
"It was a dairy farm, and he somehow wound up with a flock of turkeys," Beverly says.
The farm was inherited by Beverly's husband, Jim Pounds, and his brother, Rick Pounds.

The birds range from 10 to 37 pounds. The business manager says packing day is a very busy time.
"We do usually between, around 1,000; sometimes we do 1,200 depending on the size. We get that many done in about seven hours or so," she says.
