Thousands Line Streets For 110th Lawrenceville Memorial Day Parade

LAWRENCEVILLE (KDKA) – It's a beautiful blend of patriotism, solemnity, and spirit.
The 110th annual Memorial Day Parade in Lawrenceville is one of the longest-running Memorial Day parades in the United States.
Many people never miss it because it's a chance to show gratitude for those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
"They die for our country. They help us, you know. Fight the war and their lives have been taken because of that and we appreciate all that they do for us," said Ellen McCord of East Liberty.
Children have a chance to understand the purpose of the special holiday.
"It's to celebrate and remember the people who died in the Army," said Elise Zimmerman.
They also get to enjoy some unique entertainment, from high-flying stunts to fast little cars and high-fives and hugs from their favorite Pittsburgh mascots.
The parade route travels to Allegheny Cemetery to finish with a service of remembrance. The solemnity of the ceremony serves as a reminder to always thank those who have served and who are currently serving. The heartfelt "thank yous" seem to bring the community closer together.
"A lot of attendants, a lot of nice people down here. A lot of our friends. It's a nice day," said Gene Rickey, a Vietnam War Veteran.
In celebrating the lives of our fallen heroes, we are also celebrating our great country and the freedoms we are able to enjoy every day.
The parade featured more than 65 groups, marching bands and Veterans organizations.
