Last-Ditch Effort To Save Conneaut Lake Park Unveiled
CONNEAUT LAKE (KDKA) -- Many Pittsburgh families have made memories at historic Conneaut Lake Park.
On Wednesday evening, what was billed as the meeting of all meetings to save it, unveiled a plan to pay off its $900,000 tax bill in four years.
The plan entails transforming the park from a summer spot to a year-round cultural destination.
"They're looking at trying to make this a 12-month a year event center, which would mean a new performing arts center, a new convention center," said Lenny Adams, the ride manager.
So many people have a soft spot for the park, there's an online petition to save it from the sheriff's sale.
The place has had a rough time in recent years with the Dreamland Ballroom and the Beach Club both going up in flames.
Now, though, they have new trustees in charge and a plan for the future.
Jack Lynch is a commissioner from Crawford County, which is one of the taxing bodies the park owes.
"I think that the tax question looms large," said Lynch. "It's been out there for a very long time, it's very real."
If an agreement can't be worked out, what could happen to the lakeside park?
KDKA's David Highfield: "If this goes to sheriff's sale, what do you think that area will become?"
Adams: "I believe we will see fences go up and it will become [condominiums}."
