Landmark Church Temporarily Closed For Ceiling Repairs
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- It's one of the many historic, architectural gems in the city.
St. Mary of the Mount, built in 1871 on Mount Washington, is a place of worship and full of memories.
"Lots of memories, family from all over came and witnessed our wedding here. It was just really special," said Richelle Laskey, a parish member.
But new memories will cease for now.
The Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh has temporarily closed St. Mary's.
They're worried about cracks in the ceiling of the stunningly beautiful sanctuary. There are fears that it's just not safe until they can make repairs.
St. Mary of the Mount sits perched atop Mount Washington. It is a beacon for the faithful and a landmark for all of Pittsburgh.
Down below in the city, there's an incredible view of the church. It's even more magnificent at night, when the church is lit up.
But for now, you'll only get to see it from the outside. It's not safe to be inside.
