Juvenile Accused Of Raping Woman At Baldwin Township T Stop
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- A 15-year-old is accused of following a woman on the T from downtown Pittsburgh to a Baldwin Township T stop, where he allegedly beat her and raped her.
Zakire Garrett of Castle Shannon is in the Shuman Juvenile Detention Center after he was arrested by Port Authority Police for allegedly raping a woman Monday night around 10 p.m. at a T Station in Baldwin Township.
Sources say the teenager followed the woman, who was in her 40s, from the downtown Wood Street station to the McNeilly Road station, where he grabbed the woman, beat her and raped her on the station platform, claiming to have a gun.
Noted Pittsburgh criminal Defense Attorney William Difenderfer says the law is clear when it comes to juvenile crimes. According to Difenderfer, "Even though he said he had a weapon, if you read it, [the law], it says right here, a deadly weapon was 'used' in the commission of a crime. 'Used,' so the mere saying you have it [a gun], I don't think is enough [to rise to the level of charging the teen as an adult]."
Not far from the McNeilly Road stop in Baldwin Twp. Wednesday night, Kyle Wacker of Brookline, told KDKA-TV's Ralph Iannotti he was surprised by the alleged assault because he "figured there would be some kind of camera or something or somebody else there."
Emily Rauch, also of Brookline said she too was surprised by the reported rape, because it was "a public place, but I know … it's not a popular T station."
Ironically, sources told KDKA-TV Investigator Marty Griffin that Garrett was arrested by Port Authority Police Wednesday morning at a juvenile probation hearing, stemming from a previous crime.
