Jury Selection Begins In Trial Of Alleged "Greensburg 6" Ringleader
GREENSBURG (KDKA) -- Four jurors have been seated in the trial of alleged "Greensburg 6" ringleader Ricky Smyrnes.
Smyrnes is one of six people charged in the torture and murder of 30-year-old Jennifer Daugherty.
The jury will have to decide if Smyrnes murdered Daugherty; and if so, should he be put to death or spend the rest of his life in prison.
Smyrnes is the third of the six to go on trial.
Angela Marinucci was convicted of first-degree murder in May 2011 and is currently serving a life sentence in connection with the case. She was only 17 at the time of Daugherty's death and not eligible for the death penalty.
Melvin Knight pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in April. In August, a jury sentenced him to death.
Amber Meidinger, Peggy Miller and Robert Masters are currently awaiting trial. It's possible that any number of the three could testify against Smyrnes when his trial begins next month.
The jury will also likely hear a taped confession from Smyrnes in which he details his role in the torture and murder.
Jury selection will continue Tuesday. Opening statements are scheduled for Feb. 4.
