Jury Sees Surveillance Footage In Downtown Shooting Trial
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – The accused gunman in a shooting downtown this past spring are on trial.
Wednesday prosecutors introduced surveillance video of the shooting, in which a sheriff's deputy prevented bystanders from getting hurt.
An April day at the corner of Fifth Avenue and Wood Street downtown – people are going about their business just before 4 p.m.
That's when police say Jamel Terry is seen on surveillance footage taking off his jacket.
He told police he did that because he saw Antonio Peterson and Hassan Howze coming after him. There was bad blood between them and the footage shows an intense fight got underway.
And the fight eventually went through the window of the Capital Grille and resulted in gunfire. It intensified in the middle of the sidewalk and spilled out onto Fifth Avenue.
But when Allegheny County Sheriff Sgt. Kevin Faulds hear the shots from up on Smithfield Street, he turned onto Fifth Avenue, saw the fight and left his car, gun drawn.
"I was on the corner of Smithfield and Fifth," Faulds said. "I saw people running on Smithfield because they had heard it and seen people running where the actual incident happened."
Faulds was credited with preventing more gunshots as he moved in to break up the fight. Peterson and Howze face charges, including aggravated assault and conspiracy.
The trial is expected to wrap up later this week.
