Jubilee Kitchen Serving Those In Need This Thanksgiving
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- The Jubilee Kitchen in Pittsburgh's Hill District serves a hot meal to the poor and the needy 365 days a year. But on Thanksgiving, the kitchen goes all out - a turkey dinner served by volunteers.
Times are always tough for the poor, but this Thanksgiving may be especially so for many. The Jubilee Kitchen is now serving more and more people, families like Aliah Jones and her son, Keef.
"When you don't have a job and you have to buy yourself stuff and your son stuff, it gets kind of hard," said Jones.
"Most of the people I see have gone over the fiscal cliff, and the new people I'm seeing are the working poor who are really struggling and they are going over that cliff," says Sr. Liguori Rossner, of the Jubilee Kitchen.
It's a Thanksgiving tradition at Jubilee for the volunteers to wait individually on each person with table side service. And the volunteers get something in return.
"It makes me realize what to be thankful for," says Jenna DeMaio.
Years ago, Sandy Bach, of Shaler Township, lost her house to a fire and remembers what it is to be homeless.
"People helped us. Now, we're helping others," says Bach, who was volunteering this Thanksgiving.
And those who get that help are grateful for it.
"If it wasn't for the Sister and the volunteers, the people helping out… it's a very good thing," says Raymond Heslet, of Oakland.
