Jitney Driver Wounded In Overnight Robbery, Shooting
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- A jitney driver remains hospitalized today as police continue to investigate a late night robbery and shooting that left him with a gunshot wound to the back.
After being shot in the back, police say the jitney driver drove himself to Allegheny General Hospital overnight.
Police continue to search for the two passengers accused in the robbery and shooting.
According to investigators, police got a call after midnight that a man had shown up at Allegheny General Hospital with a gunshot wound.
The 21-year-old driver from the North Side told police that he was working at a jitney stand on Kirkbride Street when he got the call to pick up two men in the Spring Garden area.
Authorities say the driver told police the two men robbed him of his nine-millimeter pistol and possibly his wallet and identification when they got to their destination at Broadhead Fording Road in Fairywood. Police report that he then said they shot him.
With a gunshot wound to the back, the driver took himself to the hospital. Police searched his car for any evidence and towed it for further processing.
Police also searched the area where the driver claimed the shooting happened but came up empty-handed this morning.
Police described the driver as being distressed as he went in for surgery early this morning and could only give a vague description of the events that took place.
Police are hoping the driver can give a better description of the passengers as they continue the investigation.
