James Conner Voted ACC Player Of The Year By League Coaches
PITTSBURGH (93-7 The FAN) - Coming off a year in which he ran for 1,675 yards and 24 touchdowns on 277 carries and broke longstanding Pitt rushing records, running back James Conner has been named the ACC Player of the Year in the coaches' vote.
The ACC released the Coaches All-ACC Team as well, which named Conner both the league's overall Player of the Year as well as the Offensive Player of the Year.
Conner beat out Florida State quarterback and reigning Heisman Trophy winner Jameis Winston.
Conner received six votes to Winston's two for Player of the Year and received eight votes to Winston's three for the top offensive player.
For the second year in a row, Pitt has had a player earn one of the ACC's top individual football honors as defensive lineman Aaron Donald was named the league's Defensive Player of the Year in 2013 as voted on by the coaches.
In a statement released by the university, Conner thanked a number of people for this accomplishment.
"I would like to thank the coaches in the ACC for honoring me with these awards," Conner said. "This provides me with another opportunity to show thanks and appreciation to my own coaches and teammates. I know the awards have my name on them but it should simply say 'Pitt' because it was earned by our entire program. I'm proud to be a Panther and represent this great university."
In addition to the top player awards, the coaches also released their 2014 All-ACC Team.
Pitt had three selections with Conner, receiver Tyler Boyd and offensive tackle T.J. Clemmings all making the first-team.
Making the second team was Boyd as a return specialist and offensive guard Matt Rotheram.
Senior linebacker Anthony Honzalez received an honorable mention.
These players and their teammates will look to add to their season win total as they meet Houston in the Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl on Jan. 2.
