Investigation Underway After Local Company Falls Victim To Hacking
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- State police in Uniontown are investigating a person who stole more than $8,000 from a Fayette County trucking business.
Police believe a hacker placed a virus on a computer at Pleasant Trucking Inc. in Bullskin Township by sending a spam email.
"It's called a Trojan virus, and it's an email that basically you open up and once you open it up that allows them access to your computer and they're able to obtain your personal information," said Trooper Stefani Plume, of the Pennsylvania State Police.
The hacker was able to obtain passwords to an account the company used to write checks.
Police believe five fraudulent checks were written in all.
They were cashed in various states.
No arrests have been made.
"We do a lot of education to businesses, to regular - just personal people - that have bank accounts, checking accounts, savings accounts just about access device because it is such a common problem; and especially with the Internet and people paying for things online and doing their banking online, it's become more and more prominent that these types of crimes are starting to occur," said Trooper Plume.
