Travelers Brace For Flight Delays, Cancellations With Incoming Storm

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – In many western and southern states, hundreds of flights have been cancelled.

Travelers heading home for the holiday stranded at airports.

Here in Pittsburgh, families waiting for loved ones and heading to see loved ones are hoping geography is on their side.

"Yeah, I actually just drove from Columbus today and they called me, screaming, "Get home, hurry up, it's going to be crazy,'" said traveler Abby Sawon.

"Everyone that we know that knows we're going on vacation keeps telling us we're missing the first big snow," said Melanie Ward.

"Ah, this storm is supposed to be hitting the East Coast as well, so when you have a lot of cancellations and delays on the East Coast, it's really going to impact us here," said Airport Director of Communications JoAnn Jenny.

On the arrival and departure screens, it's easy to see the impact it's already had on cities like Dallas.

"Lots of cancellations there today too," said Steve Mitnick who was waiting for people at the airport. "Yeah, you know it's funny how those storms work. They start from point to point to point, but maybe by tomorrow, it will be cleared out for her."

If your travel plans do stay intact and your flights are on time, you'll also want to check on things like wait times at security checkpoints. The airport will be updating that information on its website, Facebook and Twitter.

"We're expecting at least 5,000 to 6,000 people on Wednesday morning going through the checkpoint," said Jenny. "So you want to plan ahead and come early anyway whether or not we have weather."

Airport officials also say you can check the status of using the PIT Airport mobile app for iPhone and Android.
