Ice, Freezing Rain To Create Dangerous Commute Monday
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – The warmer temperatures expected early this week will bring treacherous side effects, including freezing rain.
"A mess, a wintry mess headed our way," KDKA's Jon Burnett said.
A winter weather advisory is in effect for our area starting around midnight or 1 a.m. until about 1 p.m. Monday.
Rain is expected for the next few days, but the temperatures will still be low enough Monday morning to likely turn that rain into ice on the roads.
"Making Monday morning's rush hour a possible nightmare," Burnett said.
Sleet and freezing rain is also expected overnight. There's also a chance for some flurries, but it will leave little–to-no accumulation on the ground.
Earlier this month, similar icy conditions led to dozens of crashes in the Pittsburgh area.
In Butler County, it was reported that more that 45 accidents happened within a 15-minute period, one of which was fatal for two toddlers when their mother's SUV slid off an icy road in Connoquenessing Township.
Temperatures will continue to rise though, with temperatures as high as 55 degrees expected by Wednesday.
