Sandy Bringing Heavy Rain, Strong Winds To Area
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- The so-called Superstorm Sandy is packing quite a punch, and the effects are being felt locally as rain continues to fall across the region and gusty winds whip through.
A Flood Watch and High Wind Warning remain in effect for much of the area.
KDKA Chief Meteorologist Jeff Verszyla says we can expect rain and strong winds tonight with a temperature of 40 degrees.
"We are going to see our fair share of rain over the next 24 to 48 hours," said Verszyla. "I think most of the heaviest rain and the highest winds will occur tonight into [Tuesday] morning. Once we get to lunchtime tomorrow, the winds are going to start to diminish and the rain is going to start to taper off. So, hang in there for about another 12 to 16 hours."
"I do expect we see peak wind gusts across the area of 50 and 55 miles an hour later on tonight and into tomorrow morning," he added.
In addition, Garrett County in Maryland and Preston County in West Virginia are under a Blizzard Warning.
"We will stay rain, [but] get down into northern West Virginia, different story; already reports of some accumulating snow in Tucker County, W. Va. That's where any accumulating snows will be, to our south," Verszyla said.
On Tuesday, Verszyla says the conditions will continue to be windy and chilly with rain and a high of 46 degrees.
"So, periods of heavy rain on top of the light rain that we're going to see will continue tonight and through the day tomorrow, on top of that the gusty winds. Temperatures going nowhere," he said.
People are being advised stay indoors while the worst of the storm passes through.
