Hurricane Irene Impacts Vacation For Local Families
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Hurricane Irene is hundreds of miles away from Pittsburgh, but is still affecting the vacation plans of people from our area.
Richard and Michele Gaskill of Shaler brought their four kids home early from a vacation in Nags Head, N.C., after the manager of their cottage knocked on the door Wednesday and told them they had to leave.
"It was just awful, but what can you do?" Michele said.
Mandee Williams of Morningside was supposed to be headed to Rehoboth Beach, Del., but got an email Friday morning telling her she couldn't go because an evacuation order for tourists.
She still hopes to travel down on Monday after the storm passes.
"I am bummed, I'm really disappointed, but it's only a few days," she said. "We were supposed to stay for a week and hopefully, if all goes well, we'll be on our way Monday morning."
Chris Nice, from New Alexandria, has decided to stay put on his vacation.
He and his family are in Little River, S.C., about two miles from the beach. He says the waves are high and the wind at some points is blowing trees over.
