Huntington: 'We Believe We Have The Talent To Be In A Good Spot In September'
PITTSBURGH (93-7 The Fan)- Pittsburgh Pirates General Manager Neal Huntington joined "The Cook and Poni Show" live from Federal Street on Opening Day.
The guys asked Huntington how this team can repeat the magic from last year that saw the Pirates win 94 games, a home Wild Card win and just a game away from the National League Championship Series.
"This is a young group that should get better. We have the depth. We have the ability to make a deal if we needed to," Huntington said.
He also told the guys he feels this is a better group than the one that opened the season last year because of the pitching.
"We have three starters who were not with us on Opening Day last year. We have a guy who made the All-Star team still not even in the mix yet because of injuries." Huntington said. "We have good arms. We have a strong 12 and our bullpen is going to keep us in games."
The Pirates are not getting picked by many of the experts to advance further this year than they did last year. In fact, many are picking them to take a step back, but that doesn't bother Huntington.
"Those are the same people and same projections who had us winning no more than 80 games last year," Huntington said. "I am sure there were not very many experts who had us making the post season last year."
Huntington said this is an organization that will never steal the headlines because they won't outspend the big market clubs, but he believes this team is set for a good long run of competitive baseball.
"We feel we have the talent to put us in a good spot in September," Huntington said. "Our goal is to win the World Series this year. We will do whatever it takes to try and win the World Series this year, but we also want to be in a position to do it again next year and the year after that."
