Hunters Prepare For Start Of Season
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - Almost one million hunters will be looking for the ultimate prize in wooded areas around the state on Monday.
Many of them were in stores this weekend getting ready for the first day of hunting.
Tony Nuzzo and his son are hoping to bag a big deer on the family farm.
"There's a 10-point I saw. That's one we're going to be trying to get," Nuzzo said.
"We've already picked out a spot and everything that we're going to go at. We'll see what happens," Michael Nuzzo said.
Deer hunting season begins Monday in Pennsylvania, but hunters were buying equipment at places like Cabella's in West Virginia this weekend.
Roger Wade said the always try to sell hunters the right gun for the job and to make sure they know how to use it safely .
"We'll tell them if they point the muzzle at a person that's inappropriate. We'll talk to them about different issues about not shooting at things that just move and making sure they identify their game properly," Wade said.
Wade said it's best to keep the gun unloaded when climbing to a tree stand, going over a fence or crossing any obstacle.
He said the best advice is to abide by state game laws and to wear the required amount of blaze orange while staying warm and dry.
"Pennsylvania has so any square inches between the head, neck, back and chest of the hunter. They need to have so many inches covered. West Virginia is the same way. It's by square inches," Brittany Clegg said.
As he prepares to go hunting with his teenage son, Nuzzo said it's very important to be seen and to be safe.
"There's other people out there. You have to be safe you have to be. That's the first thing on the list then you stay dry then you get the big deer," Nuzzo said.
