Hundreds Stranded At Airport In Sandy's Wake
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - Pittsburgh International Airport was a scene of frustrated travelers Tuesday as the effects of Superstorm Sandy were being felt locally.
Dozens of flights were canceled for hours due to the storm, which forced many to either sleep at the airport overnight or find hotel rooms.
Because a lot of flights were cancelled last night, there was a lack of planes this morning, which caused even more issues for departures and left the airport looking like a ghost town.
Many travelers were finding themselves increasingly frustrated with the cancellations.
"We're not being informed real well that flights are cancelled. Rescheduling a flight to go -- instead of Baltimore, go to Chicago, and you get here and now they're saying everything's cancelled until this afternoon, just to get out of here," on traveler said.
One man drove from the Washington, D.C. area in the thick of the storm in an effort to fly out to Utah to see his brother before he deploys to Afghanistan.
"It was pretty scary. The winds were going crazy and so was the rain. It was very frightening indeed. It's devastating. This is my last chance to see my brother before he goes on deployment," Levi Bruner said.
Flights heading out west and south were slowly getting back to normal around noon.
Airport officials said they expect more flights to eastern destinations to open up this afternoon and into the evening hours.
However, it will take at least a day for things to be running normally at Pittsburgh International Airport.
