Hundreds Participate In Allegheny County Labor Council's May Day March
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Hundreds of people marched across the Smithfield Street Bridge and through the streets of Downtown Pittsburgh Friday night.
It was a May Day march organized by the Allegheny County Labor Council.
The main purpose of the rally was to bring attention to labor issues, including fair wages and immigrants' rights.
However, some demonstrators say they were also marching to show support for protestors in Baltimore.
"We are absolutely in solidarity with demonstrators in Baltimore," said Guillermo Perez of the Labor Council for Latin-American Advancement. "For us, the issue of police brutality and mass incarceration is closely tied to tension and deportation of undocumented immigrants."
Some marchers carried signs that read: "Black Lives Matter."
Demonstrator Chris Ellis had a message to people in Baltimore about the death of Freddie Gray: "We're here in Pittsburgh, and we support you guys. Black lives do matter, and I want you guys to keep out there and keep fighting."
Pittsburgh is not alone in having a May Day rally with at least some influence from what happened in Baltimore and elsewhere.
In fact, May Day marches in New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles all included calls to end police brutality.
