Hundreds Lay Wreaths On Vets' Graves At National Cemetery Of The Alleghenies

BRIDGEVILLE (KDKA) – Hundreds of people were at the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies Saturday to lay wreaths on the graves of local veterans.

It was part of "Wreaths Across America," sponsored by the Military Order of the Purple Heart.

Wreaths Across America says it wants to "remember, honor and teach," youths about veterans.

"It's a well-supported event," said Ronald Hestdalen, Director of the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies. "It's probably one of our largest events here. We're going to probably have over 2,000 people here today that will take time out of their day to stop at the cemetery and to honor the veterans and their service."

Lauice Hershberger of Baldwin was at the cemetery to lay a wreath on her husband's grave, a WWII veteran. She said the event meant a lot to her for several reasons.

"Just the fact that he fought for the country and the fact that he was a good living man, good husband, good father and a good grandfather," she said.

The wreaths were donated by the Worcester Wreath Company.
