Humane Society Seeks Public's Help To Find Injured Dog's Owner

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - The Western Pennsylvania Humane Society says it needs help finding the owners of a severely injured dog.

A 4-year-old Siberian husky named Barney was found on Race Street in Homewood with a deep gash across its neck.

It was taken to the shelter and then transported to an emergency clinic.

Veterinarians say the dog is making a good recovery, but they're not exactly sure what happened to it.

The dog was underweight and possibly neglected. He was found covered in urine burns.

"He looks good today," said Dr. Julie Compton with PVSEC. "He's bright, barking. He is looking for food, hungry. He is much improved after yesterday and his wound looks so much better after being cleaned up."

Now the Husky is ready for surgery to actually repair the wound -- a process that should take about 30 to 40 minutes after sedation.

"It's a pretty long incision," said Compton. "It goes side-to-side, 40 to 50 percent around his neck. We'll get it closed up, then keep him tonight and make sure he's comfortable."

After that, he will be returned to the Humane Society and then adopted. And he seems to have the right temperament.

"Some of the dogs in that area are abused, whether it's by neglect or abuse physically, they can turn out to be nasty dogs, this dog is not nasty," Compton said. "This dog wags its tail to see you. This dog wants to come and greet you."

While Barney's prognosis is good, the search to find whoever slashed him is intensifying.

"Somebody did this to him," Compton said. "Although I think it's more of a neglect, somebody purposefully abused, neglected this dog and they need to be found. It's not okay."

Anyone with information is urged to call the Western Pennsylvania Humane Society at (412)-321-4625 ext. 216
