2 Injured In Moon Twp. House Explosion
MOON TOWNSHIP (KDKA) – Two people were injured in a Moon Township house explosion Saturday evening.
According to officials at the scene, the explosion happened in the 1600-block of Charlton Heights Road around 6:30 p.m.
"It sounded like an airplane went down. I just heard this huge explosion and I came up and all I saw was the flames and the house is just completely gone," David Plitt said.
Police said fire ignited a home next to the one that exploded.
The victims have been identified as 61-year-old Alan Lisica and 47-year-old Shawn Landa. Both were taken to UPMC Mercy Hospital, but their conditions are unknown.
"They found one person in the next door home and they had to uncover him from the debris to get him out of there. And then, there was another victim from the actual home that exploded was found in the front yard under debris," Moon Township Police Captain Gregory Seamon said.
Kim Haberlein was celebrating a birthday just a few homes away when she heard the blast. She saw the flames and then ran to help.
"One gentleman had some cuts on the back of his head. His hands and feet were burned. He seemed a little confused. He had insulation stuck to his head," Haberlein said.
Police said numerous homes have damage.
"Most of its drywall and some of the windows, none of them are broken but they're popped out of the frames. The garage door – the back door to the garage - is completely blown out of there," Nancy McArdle, a neighbor, said.
Initially the whole street was evacuated and the gas was shut off. That has since been restricted to just the homes near the explosion.
According to the gas company, there were no gas leaks or safety problems found at the residence, the investigation is continuing and it may take several days for authorities to determine the cause of the explosion.
