Homewood Students Brave Rain On Walk & Bike To School Day
HOMEWOOD (KDKA) - Dozens of local elementary school students braved the storms this morning and walked to school.
They didn't do it because they had to. They did it because they were participating in a national event.
It was an exciting start to the school day for students at Faison Elementary in Homewood.
They took part in Walk and Bike to School Day. It's an event to encourage kids to travel safe routes from home to the classroom.
"Students have to walk in the rain, in the snow, throughout the entire school year. So, events like this are important to really show that the community is supporting them," Marteen Garay of the Homewood Children's Village, said.
This national event is particularly important at Faison Elementary because so many of the students walk to school each and every day.
"We know that upwards of 50 percent of our families here in Homewood don't have automobiles. So, when your child has to get to school and you don't have a car, you walk with them or they walk alone and sometimes they ride their bikes," Shannah Tharp-Gilliam, of the Homewood Children's Village, said.
Kids, who live farther from the school and normally take the bus, joined in and braved the elements to support their friends and classmates.
"We got to talk and have fun and some people rode their bikes and it was fun," Cashmere Howard said.
"It was fun because everybody else was walking and biking and it was kind of raining," Markita Carter said.
It sure was raining too. However, teachers, students, and volunteers had plenty of rain gear.
This is the fourth time leaders with Homewood Children's Village have put together a Walk to School Day.
