Homewood Shooting Leaves Victim In Serious Condition
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- A shootout in a crowded neighborhood full of children sent police into action in the city's Homewood section Friday night.
The victim was shot at least once in the chest.
The exchange of gunfire happened around 8:30 p.m. in the 7500-block of Hamilton Avenue, less than a block from a city fire station.
A witness summoned help and first responders arrived in seconds. Pittsburgh Police Lt. Richard Pritchard told KDKA's Kym Gable the victim and another man exchanged gunfire in a vacant lot.
The victim stumbled into the street, telling a driver at a jitney station he'd been shot.
"The victim collapsed over by the jitney station, told the jitney driver that he'd been hit and the jitney driver sat him on the porch and walked to the fire station and got a fireman," said Lt. Pritchard. "He's very luck in two ways; one, that the fire station was so close, and two, that it was an angular impact and that it didn't really penetrate his organs as badly as we had thought at first."
The bullet went through his torso and out his back. He was taken to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital and last listed in serious condition late Friday night.
Police reportedly recovered two weapons and a bag of bullets.
The investigation into the shooting continues.
