Man Shot, Killed Outside Of Popular Homewood Safe Haven
HOMEWOOD (KDKA) – Police are investigating after a man was shot and killed in Homewood early Sunday morning.
The shooting happened near the intersection of Hamilton Avenue and Hale Street around 6 a.m., just outside of a house that's considered a neighborhood safe haven.
Police say 38-year-old Jeffrey Jackson was shot and killed outside of the house.
"It's traumatizing," said Art House Founder Vanessa German. "It's horrible to wake up to gunshots and the sound of a woman screaming, 'Somebody shot my boyfriend.'"
Jackson's body was found a few feet away from a sign saying "Stop shooting, we love you," in front of the Art House. It's a popular safe haven for children to learn and develop their artistic talents.
German first composed the "Stop shooting" signs in response to neighborhood violence.
"It's really sad to know there was a body laying out here, right in front of the Art House, you know, right in front of all the beautiful paintings," she said.
Police say the victim was shot four times in the chest and died at the scene. After hearing gunshots around 5 a.m., a number of people went outside -- including children.
One of the neighbors who knew the victim was relieved that her son caught a bus just before the shooting happened. She's hoping a witness will come forward with information.
Meanwhile, Germans says she just wants peace.
"We deserve to have peace in front of the Art House, like we just -- the kids deserve, we all deserve that peace," she said.
