Munhall Homeowner Shoots, Kills Intruder
MUNHALL (KDKA) -- A homeowner shot and killed an intruder early Tuesday morning in Munhall.
According to police, the shooting happened at a home in the 100-block of East Eugene Avenue near Victor Way and Wade Way around 3:45 a.m.
Investigators say the 58-year-old homeowner had been contacted by a neighbor who saw two men breaking into his detached garage.
"About quarter to four this morning, Munhall Police received a call from a homeowner that someone was breaking into his garage," said Sgt. Joseph Cibula, the Acting Munhall Police chief. "The homeowner came out of his house to confront the suspect inside of his garage. Both the homeowner and the suspect did have a weapon on them."
Both opened fire, and it spread out into the alleyway in front of the garage. More than a dozen shots were fired. The homeowner was unhurt but shaken.
The Allegheny County Medical Examiner's Office identifies the man who was killed as 23-year-old Andrew Stevens of Munhall. His body was found in the nearby alley.
He was shot multiple times during the gunfire.
"There was actually two people at that garage," said Sgt. Cibula. "When the homeowner confronted that first person, the second person popped his head out of the garage, and then when he saw the homeowner had a gun on him, he took off."
Authorities identify the second man as 24-year-old Shawn Conroy.
Police found him about a block away. He also had a gun.
Police say Conroy had been inside the garage while Stevens allegedly acted as a lookout.
Conroy is facing charges of burglary and conspiracy to commit burglary.
A third man found near the scene was also armed.
"We don't think he's involved, he just happened to hear the scanner and he came out to see what was going on and our officers had him detained," said Sgt. Cibula.
Police do not believe the homeowner knew the intruders.
The case is being reviewed by the Allegheny County District Attorney's Office.
