Homeless Camps Getting Kicked Out Of North Shore
NORTH SHORE (KDKA) – Time is up for many members of our area's homeless population living in camps on the North Shore.
Weeks ago, officials told them to get out and now workers are starting to move in to make sure they're gone.
PennDOT contractors are now installing poles for fences to enclose the area and to stop the homeless from camping out under the I-579 underpasses.
"From here we'll continue putting fencing around bridges where individuals are living illegally under our bridges," said Steve Cowan with PennDOT.
It started in July when officials informed homeless people that they can no longer camp out under three overpasses near East Ohio Street and under the Veteran's Bridge due to safety concerns.
"Individuals are building fires underneath our structures, they're creating lots of garbage, there is unfortunately drug paraphernalia, it's unsanitary conditions," Cowan said.
So far, one homeless encampment is gone, but two others remain.
Larry Allen admits it's not a good place to live.
"This place here doesn't have any water fixtures or, you know, toilet fixtures," he said.
But the question is now where will he go?
"Summer last year, I ventured down to here and been stuck ever since," he said.
However, Allen did praise Operation Safety Net which helps homeless people with food, clothing, medical help and shelter.
