Hit-And-Run Driver Arrested On The South Side
SOUTH SIDE (KDKA) - A driver was arrested on the South Side early Tuesday morning.
According to police, the man hit several parked cars along East Carson Street and never stopped.
Keith Hughes, 41, tried to regain his balance while police gave him a field sobriety test.
The front end of the rented Chevy Impala was smashed. Police believe Hughes initially rammed a parked car on the South Side and took off.
The impact must have been significant, because police say the airbag was deployed when they spotted the car at the Get-Go gas station just minutes after the accident.
A Volkswagen Golf suffered the worst damage, but the parked car, once hit, caused a domino effect. It rear-ended the car in front, which hit another car and a fourth vehicle was bumped.
Tyler Ball, who lives in the South Side Slopes, says this is not an unusual occurrence.
"My car's been hit two or three different times without anybody leaving a note overnight or anything," Ball said.
Most of the cars had minor damage, with the exception of Hughes' car and the one he is accused of running into.
Ball says he would like to see a bigger police presence in the South Side to prevent accidents like this from happening.
"I think checkpoints leaving the South Side going into Homestead direction would be good," Ball said.
Hughes was placed under arrest for suspicion of DUI and careless driving.
