Highlands Superintendent Addresses School Bus Incident
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Claims by a few parents in one local school district were disturbing.
They said that a six-year old boy jumped on top of a little girl and assaulted her on a school bus. The Superintendent in the Highlands School District denied it from the beginning and today showed surveillance video to KDKA-TV from the bus.
Superintendent Dr. Joe Latess says the claims by parents have caused chaos in the school district. He has already published a letter to parents on the district's website and said today that the bus video proves nothing violent happened on board.
He says the video only shows the boy pulling the little girls' hair.
"The appropriate discipline was administered, so we handled it as it should be handled," Dr. Latess said. "With regard to some of the things that were being said by one individual that were actually very descriptive and extremely disturbing, (they) did not happen."
Highlands principal Ian Miller showed KDKA-TV's Kym Gable surveillance video from the bus. Legally, the footage can not be televised.
One of the mothers, who asked not to be identified, claimed two students reported the boy jumped on the girl in a sexually suggestive way.
Dr. Latess said, as far as he's concerned, it's now a closed case.
