Highlands Elementary Evacuated Due To Strong Gas Odor
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Officials with the Highlands School District say an elementary school had to be evacuated Friday morning due to a gas odor.
According to the district's Twitter account, Highlands Elementary was evacuated around 10:15 a.m. due to a strong odor of gas in the building. Students and staff were sent to the playground.
Officials say the fire department and gas company were called in to assess the issue.
Highlands Elementary Parents: Due to a strong gas odor in the building, students and staff were safely evacuated to the playground at about 10:15am. The fire dept. and gas company are currently on-site to assess the issue. The school will keep parents posted with any updates.

Both later determined "there was nothing of concern" in the building.
Students were then allowed to return to class.
Update: After an extensive building check, the fire department and gas company determined that there was nothing of concern in the Highlands Elementary School building. It is safe for students and staff to re-enter the building and resume the school day.
