High Winds To Blame For Damage Across Area
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - As high winds tore through the area, they left behind all sorts of destruction from trees falling on homes to in one case, actually knocking down parts of a house.
With the arrival of the cold front, winds began taking down trees. No matter where you were in western Pennsylvania, it's likely timber was down somewhere nearby.
In Fox Chapel, pine trees with their shallow root structures were ripped out of the soaked ground. Some of them ended up leaning on a house on Woodland Road.
KDKA's Ross Guidotti reports:
In Plum, a home on Jackson Road was punctured by a large tree that fell directly on it. The tree crushed the roof and forced the three people inside to flee.
By luck or grace, no one was hurt.
On Freeport Road in Arnold, wind did even more damage.
"We heard a boom. It sounded like thunder," Ron Cotton said.
It was in fact the home next door collapsing. Heavy rain and then the wind, literally tore away the brick from the front of the home. Once gone, the first floor let go.
"Firefighters came up, their first concern was shutting all the utilities off. Secondly, was to shore up the side here to keep it from falling down more," Cotton said. "I'm glad it didn't come down on my place."
The family that lived in the home in Plum, as well as the woman who lived in the Arnold home are now looking for new places to live.
Both structures are now condemned.
