HAZMAT Team Called To Train Derailment In Fayette Co. After Flammable Solvent Spills From Car
UPPER TYRONE TOWNSHIP, Pa. (KDKA) - A HAZMAT team was on the scene of a train derailment in Fayette County after a car tipped over and caused hundreds of gallons of flammable industrial solvent to spill out.
911 dispatchers confirm a car has derailed at Broadford Road and Woods Road in Upper Tyrone Township, Fayette County.
They say the car tipped over and spilled a clear liquid. They were not sure what this liquid is, so a HAZMAT team was sent to investigate.
Jim Bittner, HAZMAT director for the Fayette County Emergency Management Agency says a few hundred gallons of flammable industrial solvent leaked into Jacob's Creek.
There were no injuries or evacuations, and the solvent isn't expected to harm the wildlife in Jacob's Creek or the Yough River.
The car was detached from a train. Bittner says it's believed the train's brakes were faulty. When a train's brakes are faulty, a safety precaution called a derailer flips a car off the tracks.
This is the second train to derail in Fayette County in the past week. Three trains derailed in Hempfield Township on Friday.
