Man Killed In Hays Accident Identified
HAYS (KDKA) - Mifflin Road in Hayes was closed for several hours this morning while police tried to determine what caused a driver to crash into a creek.
The Allegheny County Medical Examiner's Office identified the driver as 47-year-old David Pater, of Glassport.
He died of blunt force trauma to the head and trunk.
After interviewing other drivers on the road at the time of the crash, police said they are also looking into the possibility that Pater may have swerved to get out of the way of an animal.
"The witness was following behind. So, she did not see the deer but said he jacked his brakes suddenly. So, she felt that it might have been an animal since there are a lot of deer on this road," Connolly said.
The stretch of Mifflin Road, between Lebanon Road and Buttermilk Hollow Road, has been the site of numerous fatal crashes in the past.
According to police, many had to do with people going well over the posted 25 mph speed limit.
"There's a lot of road side memorials. We've done several fatals on this particular bend. But, if the motoring public does the speed limit, this road is as safe as any other," Connolly said.
Pittsburgh police accident investigators continue their investigation.
