Hartnell's Last-Second Goal Snaps Pens' Streak
PHILADELPHIA (KDKA) – The Philadelphia Flyers ended the Penguins' 12-game winning streak last season and they did it again Sunday afternoon.
Scott Hartnell scored with less than a second to play in overtime to give the Flyers a 3-2 win, which snapped an 11-game winning streak by the Penguins.
Pittsburgh controlled the first two periods and took a 2-0 lead into the final frame.
The Flyers started the period on the power play. Kimmo Timonen ripped a slap shot through traffic that beat Marc-Andre Fleury just 31 seconds into the third period to cut the Penguins' lead in half.
About four minutes later, the Flyers would strike again.
Evgeni Malkin turned the puck over at his own blue line. Wayne Simmonds took control and fed Claude Giroux who ripped a quick pass down low to Hartnell.
Fleury slid over, but left the top half of the net open and Hartnell filled the void to tie the game at 2-2.
From there, the Flyers had several great chances to score, but Fleury stood tall to force overtime. He finished the say with 24 saves.
With time winding down in the extra frame, Danny Briere gained the blue line, pulled up and hit Hartnell coming late into the play. Hartnell's quick shot beat the buzzer and Fleury to send the fans home happy.
Craig Adams gave the Penguins a 1-0 lead in the first period on a great deflection of a shot by Letang that just trickled into the back of the net.
Pittsburgh outshot the Flyers 17-8 in the period, but came up empty on two power play chances.
In the second period, the Penguins continued to dominate and outshot the Flyers 10-2, but were only able to tack on a late goal.
Letang held the puck in at the blue line and fed Malkin down low in the corner. Malkin spun off a check by Giroux, skated across the goalmouth and tucked the puck under Bryzgalov's pads with 53 seconds to go in the period.
Bryzgalov gave his team a chance to win the game by stopped 38 shots in the contest.
Pittsburgh will be looking to start up a new winning streak when they host the Winnipeg Jets Tuesday night at CONSOL Energy Center.
