Harrison Township Crash Victims Identified
HARRISON TOWNSHIP (KDKA) – Two young women were killed in an overnight accident in Harrison Township.
Police found the accident around 8 a.m. in the 900-block of Olive Road near the intersection of Old Freeport Road. Sammie Smith, 19 of Leechburg, and Beth Carney, 19, of Apollo, were killed.
"I tried not to look into the car that close, but I could tell that there were bodies in the car," Dave Lindenmuth said.
Investigators said the reason the wreck wasn't discovered until Tuesday morning was because it came to rest amongst other wrecked vehicles at the Gillette Towing Company.
"They went last night to Walmart at 11 o'clock and they weren't found until this morning," Courtney Craig, the victims' roommate said.
Roommates gathered nearby as the victims' bodies were extricated from the black Chevrolet Cobalt. The tragic news quickly spread on Facebook.
"Someone mentioned a car wreck in [Harrison Township] and thought it was a black Cobalt and we didn't want to believe it," Craig said.
Investigators also said conditions were difficult for driving last night and speed may have played a factor.
However, they do not believe alcohol played a role in the crash.
