Harlem Globetrotter Takes A Stand Against Bullying
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) --- Sometimes it takes a famous face to make a point and that is what happened Monday morning at St. Mary's School . A member of the Harlem Globetrotters made an appearance at the school to discuss bullying.
"I never stop worrying because it's scary because it hurts their self-esteem and you just want to protect your kids," says mother Bekki Reiser.
Student got to learn the message from Dizzy Grant -- one of the world famous Harlem Globetrotters.
Grant is traveling the country talking to kids about the sensitive subject of bullying.
"I always try to give real life examples because I was in their shoes at one point. I try to let them know that they are not alone and this is what you can do stop bullying and keep from being bullied," Grant says.
Dizzy taught the kids how to do some basketball tricks and laid out the A-B-C's of bullying.
"A" stands for action. "B" stands for the kids to be brave and speak up. "C" stands for compassion.
"Bullying means being mean to someone," says third grade student Kole Reiser.
"Because so many of our children are athletes and athletes are held up as heroes and role models in our society today. Given the nature of the program, I thought I'd be very impressionable and I certainly think he left a very nice impression on the children," says Principal Antoinette Pilarski.
"They hear it at home. They hear it at school and it's nice that this is a closed community so they do protect each other," Bekki Reiser says.
