Greyhound Bus Crashes On Pa. Turnpike, Several Injured
LANCASTER COUNTY (KDKA/AP) -- State police say several people were injured when a Greyhound bus crashed and toppled onto its side early this morning along the Pennsylvania Turnpike.
According to a report from the Associated Press, officials at three hospitals said 14 people altogether were brought in. Four uninjured passengers were picked up by another bus; and the conditions of the others were unclear.
The accident happened just after 6 a.m. in Penn Township, Lancaster County. State police report that there were approximately 28 passengers on board.
The Associated Press reports that a Turnpike spokesperson said rescue crews had to free a woman who was trapped in the wreckage in a rural area about a mile east of the Lebanon-Lancaster exit.
The bus was going westbound in the left lane when the driver lost control, according to state police.
Authorities say the front end of the bus then hit a jersey barrier causing it to move along the barrier with its left rear side. It then crossed over the lanes, went over an embankment and ended up flipping onto its left side.
State police have identified the driver as 24-year-old Kareem Farmer of Philadelphia.
The Associated Press reports the bus was headed to St. Louis from New York City.
Both westbound lanes of the turnpike were closed until about 10:20 a.m., forcing drivers to be rerouted off the interstate, according to the Associated Press.
