Greenberg: It's Possible For Small Markets To Compete In MLB
PITTSBURGH (KDKA 93-7 The Fan)- In Major League Baseball, many fans in smaller markets talk about the lack of a salary cap when they look at their club's inability to compete.
But former Texas Rangers CEO/Managing Partner Chuck Greenberg says that it is possible to compete.
"It makes it challenging when you're from a smaller market franchise, because baseball's never had a salary cap," Greenberg told Bob Pompeani. But because of revenue sharing, "there's plenty of revenue for every franchise, even small markets, to compete. But ... they have a smaller margin for error, their window of opportunity to succeed has a more brief duration."
Greenberg can sympathize with Pirates fans wishing for a salary cap.
"The reality is it's never going to happen, this is the system," he said. "I'm sure it will be tweaked over time, and you have to find ways to compete as effectively as possible within it."
