Great Racers Have 'Friendly' Competition
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- On the delicate subject of age -- let's just say they're both 70 something -- though you'd have a hard time believing that watching them go through their paces at the Schenley Oval.
Pearl Deaniello and Linda Adams are aiming to beat their personal bests
"And you're only competing against yourself unless you have your partner," Pearl said.
Come Sunday, Pearl, Linda and dozens of other women their age will be competing in the 35th annual Richard S. Caliguiri City of Pittsburgh Great Race -- and if you doubt the ferocity of that competition just ask Linda who's won her age group six out of eight tries.
Pearl's been at it 30 years – Linda not as long – but both have a message for people their age – you're never too old to begin.
"Just got for it," Linda says. "If I can start at 67 so can you. Just start."
In running, they've found, enduring friendships, good health, enjoyment of the simple things and a relief from the stresses of life.
"One with nature, you're seeing the trees, you're hearing the birds and what's going on in your life is like an afterthought," Pearl said.
And the Great Race is the cherry on top.
"It's the culmination of the racing season and it's just so many people and so much fun, and I just love every minute of it," Linda said.
