Good Samaritans Jump From Overpass While Helping Injured Driver

WAYNESBURG (KDKA) -- On the campus of Waynesburg University in Greene County, an email is circulating amongst students asking for prayers for two nursing students injured while trying to help a motorist.

State police say the two students, Alissa Boyle and Cami Abernathy, jumped 40 to 50 feet from an overpass on Interstate 79 to the road below to get out of the way of a tractor-trailer.

Derek Hartzog, 21, of Washington, Pa., the driver they stopped to help, also jumped. They are all now at Ruby Memorial Hospital.

Mount Morris Vol. Fire Department Chief Chris Osechy said when his men arrived on the scene, other nursing students who were part of a group headed to Morgantown for clinical studies were already tending to the three victims.

The chief said the victims were found lying in a grassy area near the berm.

Boyle is in critical condition. Abernathy and Hartzog are listed in serious condition.
