Woman, 2 Children Taken To Hospital After Domestic Violence Incident In Hazelwood
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - A child missing the school bus in Hazelwood Friday morning led to violence.
Investigators say that child's mother ran to a neighbor pleading for help, saying a man armed with a knife had her baby.
The call came in as a stabbing on Gloster Avenue around 9:20 a.m. The caller told investigators a woman came to her door with blood on her hands and feet and a man armed with a knife had her baby on Blair Street, which is a few streets over.
Officers arrested 32-year-old Devon Oatneal when they got to the scene.
According to court paperwork, things escalated when a 7-year-old missed the school bus. Police say Oatneal got mad and grabbed his daughter by the head and slammed her on the ground.
Detectives say Oatneal started beating the child's mother with a broom when she got involved.
The child's mom says she thinks her daughter grabbed a knife in self-defense. Her mother told investigators she believes her daughter got cut on her wrist when Oatneal was trying to grab the knife off of her.
The woman told police Oatneal also threw a coffee pot on the ground and made her and their daughter lay in the broken glass. A 2-year-old was also in the home during the assault. Police say the toddler wasn't hurt.
The woman also sustained some scrapes and bruises on her arms. She and the two kids were taken to the hospital in stable condition.
This isn't the first time Oatneal has had a run-in with police. He is also facing charges of terroristic threats, stalking and harassment for an incident that happened in February.
Oatneal has been charged with endangering the welfare of children, simple assault and recklessly endangering another person, in this most recent case.
