Get Marty: Metal Plates Slashing Tires On Stretch Of Route 65

FREEDOM (KDKA) -- The safety director at a local trucking company saw a dangerous situation developing along a local highway and called "Get Marty."

"There could be a major accident. They could have gone through the barriers and injured other people and the workers," says Ron Derbis, the safety director at an Ambridge trucking company.

In a 10-day period, at least 30 tires on company trucks were slashed by metal plates sticking out along a stretch of Route 65 in the Freedom area.

"We have $10,000 in tire damage. That roadway is dangerous," says Derbis.

KDKA took Derbis' concerns to PennDOT. The agency responded immediately.

"I hate it. It must be fixed right now," says Dan Cessna with PennDOT. "We asked the contractor to change out the metal plates that were slashing the tires. The contractor has also agreed to pay for tire damage."

PennDOT is still concerned about the roadway being too narrow and the plates causing damage.

They promise to keep an eye on the project.
