Gateway's Terry Smith Will Still Coach
MONROEVILLE (KDKA) -- People packed an auditorium to support a local high school coach.
Last month, the Gateway School Board made the athletic director position part-time.
Wednesday night, the board decided whether Terry Smith would still be able to coach.
At the beginning of the meeting, the board said that Smith would still be able to coach football for Gateway High School, for the next year at least.
KDKA's Christine D'Antonio reports:
They also said that his athletic director position would remain part-time with a $45,000 salary and half of his benefits paid for by the district.
The audience rose to their feet when they heard that Smith could still coach, but it still seems unjust to some.
"What other big time school district do you know of in this area – big time meaning the Woodland Hills, the North Alleghenys, you know, the Upper St. Clairs – would have a part-time athletic director?" William Timbers, Smith's friend, said.
In addition, Smith will receive $10,000 for being the head football coach.
The athletic director position was cut down as part of a $7 million mandatory budget reduction. Eighteen teacher positions were also cut.
