Gas Prices Spiking With Memorial Day Weekend Ahead
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Sticker shock has hit the gas pumps again.
The BP station in Bridgeville went to $2.99 a gallon on Monday, and the Get Go across the street followed suit.
"I think it's going up a little too quick; but with seasons, it usually goes up in the summer, and hopefully, it will go back down," says Drew Miller of Bethel Park.
It did at the Get Go - 4 cents a gallon while KDKA was there, from $2.99 to $2.95.
"I don't think there's going to be anything over $3 a gallon this holiday, unless something big happens," Don Bowers, of Superior Petroleum, said.
In fact, the rest of the Get Go's in the local market are at $2.89, and so are the Sheetz. But $2.95 is becoming the market norm.
"It's outrageous; it's the taxes - that's what it is," said Tracy Brito, of Bridgeville.
"Combined Pennsylvania's very high gas taxes, which I believe now are the highest in the country, along with crude oil prices at new 2015 highs at about $62 a barrel, and that sets the stage for prices to begin rising," said Patrick DeHaan, the senior oil analyst at Gasbuddy.com.
Add in summer fuel and the Memorial Day holiday and you have the makings of the spike.
The good news is the experts don't think this will last.
"We could see numbers coming down to where they were at the beginning of this year, a few months ago where you are seeing prices $2.25, $2.30. I really think that could happen," said Bowers.
In the interim, if you see gas below $2.89, buy it because this week in this town, that price won't last long.
