Gas Prices Dropping Locally, Still Lower Across Ohio Border
EAST LIVERPOOL, Ohio (KDKA) – After seeing gas prices in the mid-$3 range for month, the prices are finally starting to come down.
And while they can still jump around a bit in the Pittsburgh market, a drive across the border to Ohio revealed prices ranging from $2.91 to $2.88.
"I never understood why we pay more," said Laroche College student Amanda Garland.
Garland often travels to see her sister at Kent State. She added, "it's very aggravating 'cause you know it's just taxes."
Well, that's partially true according to Patrick Dehaan of GasBuddy.com.
He says the combined state, federal and local taxes in Pennsylvania were about $.60 a gallon in the month of October. In Ohio, it's only $.46, so there's a difference of about $.14 just crossing the state line.
But that's only part of the reason. Superior Petroleum's Don Bowers says our gas comes from the East and Ohio's from the West.
"Everything's based off the Chicago market coming into Ohio, over the Ohio line and everything in Pennsylvania is based on the New York Stock Exchange," he said. "And they can vary that much, oh, they can vary as much as $.50."
It's hard to tell if Pittsburgh will see prices below $3, but all the experts say the price should continue to drop.
