Homes Evacuated Due To Gas Leak Concerns After Crash In Westmoreland Co.

HEMPFIELD TOWNSHIP, Pa. (KDKA) -- Homes in Hempfield Township, Westmoreland County, were evacuated late Tuesday night due to concerns about a possible gas leak.

The evacuations started shortly after a car crashed into a utility pole and a Peoples Gas limiting station along Swede Hill Road.  The call came in to 911 around 11:12 p.m. on Monday.

An emergency official said overnight the evacuation order was issued for "precautionary" reasons, but it was not clear if there was an actual leak.

Approximately 20 residents living on Swede Hill Road between Menock Park and Hunter Road were evacuated. They were taken to the Hempfield Township Municipal Building.

Shortly after 2 a.m., the evacuated residents were seen leaving the municipal building and returning to their homes. Officials did not comment on why the evacuation was lifted.

Part of Swede Hill Road remained closed to traffic early Wednesday morning as crews from West Penn Power and Peoples Gas continued to make repairs.

An emergency official said no one was injured in the crash.
