Garrett Jones Excited About Addition Of Russell Martin
BRADENTON Fla. (93-7 The Fan) – Garrett Jones and the Pirates will be looking to erase the memory of another last season slide this year.
Jones joined The Fan Morning Show Wednesday to talk about how Spring Training is going and looks ahead to the upcoming season.
Jones is ultimately working to break free of the "platoon player" label, but is expected to split time this year with Gaby Sanchez.
"I think every player wants to be an everyday player. Me and Gaby [Sanchez] have talked about it. We know what our situation kind of is and what it might entail. He wants to be in there every day. He feels like he's an everyday guy, and so do I. It's all going to depend on who's producing and who's hitting," Jones said.
Jones said part of being in the big leagues is dealing with criticism from the media, but that it's not something you can dwell on.
"I think every player sometimes reads or hears things that are obviously negative. There's going to be some negative talk. That's part of it. You have to learn to deal with that and if you can't, it's just going to bother you, it's going to keep you up at night. So I think, as a player, you just need to laugh it off, shrug it off and say, 'Hey, I just need to go out there and do my job, and that's all I can really control,'" Jones said.
One guy Jones is excited about it Russell Martin who he said is bringing a ton of energy to Spring Training.
"I think he's looking to have a huge year this year. He looks ready to go," Jones said.
