Garrett Jones Anticipating Platoon At First Base
PITTSBURGH (93-7 The FAN) - Garrett Jones hit 27 home runs last year, but still finds himself in a battle for playing time at first base as spring training picks up this week.
Jones joined Starkey, Miller and Mueller on 93-7 The FAN to talk about the potential platoon situation with Gaby Sanchez at first base. Jones said he knows he won't get all the starts, but wants to make the most of the opportunities he does get.
"I think it's going to be up to us. I know Gaby wants to play everyday, and I want to be in everyday, so it's just going to be a matter of who's producing on the field consistently," he says. "When I do get chances against some lefties here and there, hopefully I can do some damage. I know I probably won't be in there all the time, but when I get that opportunity, I've got to show I can do something to stay in there."
When it came to discussing his contract situation, Jones said it's every players goal to get a multi-year deal, but he's in a situation where the team wants to work year-to-year and he'll just have to keep proving himself each season.
We wrapped things up with Jones asking him which young guys have stood out so far.
