Garrett County Inundated With Superstorm Sandy Snow
GARRETT COUNTY (KDKA) -- Garrett County in Maryland has been blasted with snow since Superstorm Sandy started lashing the northeast area of the country.
People in some parts of that county have reported close to 30 inches of the white stuff.
And more than 17,000 customers are reported to be without power, which is more than half the population of the county.
After being closed for a time, Route 68 reopened there late Tuesday.
KDKA's David Highfield stopped at a rest stop along that stretch of road where he found Bill Murphy plowing the parking lot. He said he has been moving snow for 24 hours straight.
"I couldn't believe it," said Murphy. "I thought they said it was going to hit in like lower West Virginia, and I never dreamed we would get it up here," Murphy said. "Of course, this is Garrett County, we always get snow, but this is crazy."
Before heading home to a house in the dark, Ann Jones, another Garrett County resident, stopped at a truck stop with electricity because of a generator.
She estimates her home will be without power for several days due to trees falling over onto power lines.
"We have a steep bank with trees that went down over lines that are really hard to get to, so we could be out for a couple days," said Jones.
There's no estimate as to when power will be restored.
And the snow continues to fall with several more inches expected through Wednesday.
